Period of stricter border controls extended in Germany

The German government has decided to extend the period of stricter border controls in order to ensure domestic security and combat illegal migration more effectively. This means that all border crossing points will be subject to enhanced checks of vehicles and inspection of drivers' documents.

The enhanced controls will be enforced at the borders with all nine of Germany's neighbours, even though they are members of the Schengen area - the Netherlands, France, Belgium, Denmark, Poland, Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg. The period of stricter border checks will start on 16 September and will last at least 6 months.

Some roads will be more severely affected by these changes. On the A17 motorway between Prague and Dresden, at the Breitenau-Schönwald junction, traffic jams have already become more common. The Suben, Walserberg and Kiefersfelden junctions on the A3 Linz-Passau, A8 Salzburg-Munich and A93 Kufstein-Rosenheim motorways between Germany and Austria are often affected by random security checks of the vehicles and driver’s documents. In order to enter Germany, all drivers must carry a valid identity document and other travel documentation.
