From the beginning of August 2024, several new changes have come into force in Slovakia. Fines for non-payment of road tolls have been significantly increased. The country has also removed traffic restrictions for trucks using the Vámosszabadi bridge.
Increased fines for non-payment of tolls
Slovakia has increased the fines for non-payment of road tolls. Under the new system, the amount of the fine imposed will be 100 or 150 times higher than the value of the unpaid toll. The maximum possible fine will be €1,050. Until now, the value of the fine was equivalent to 50 times the value of the unpaid toll.
If the exact amount of the unpaid toll cannot be determined, drivers will be fined €800 maximum. In lighter cases, the fine will be €500.
Reopening of the Vámosszabadi bridge for trucks
On the Slovak-Hungarian border, the reconstruction of the Vámosszabadi (also known as the Medve) bridge, which connects the two countries, has finally been completed. The bridge which extends over the Danube River connects the towns of Nagymegyer and Vámosszabadi. In May 2023, restrictions were introduced to prevent vehicles weighing more than 3.5t from using the bridge. This restriction is now no longer in force and the bridge can be used by trucks.
