Austria is introducing a new CO2 tax

Austria is introducing a new CO2 tax

As many European countries are introducing new road tolls in 2024, the Austrian government is also changing its toll system. Starting from January 1st, 2024, the road tolls applied to trucks will depend not only on the noise and air pollution caused but also on the amount of CO2 gas emitted.

The new CO2 tax will apply to all vehicles weighing 3.5t and more. The value of the tax will depend on the distance traveled, the number of axles of the vehicle, the EURO category, and the amount of CO2 gas emitted by the vehicle’s engine. The CO2 emissions of your vehicle can be estimated by using this calculator. Based on their EURO categories, the vehicles will be divided into five tariff groups:

  • Group E – solely electricity or hydrogen-powered vehicles.
  • Group A – EURO 6 category vehicles.
  • Group B – EURO 5 or EEV category vehicles.
  • Group C – EURO 4 category vehicles.
  • Group D - EURO 0 - EURO 3 category vehicles.

Depending on the number of axles, vehicles will also be divided into five different tariff categories (prices are in EUR cents per kilometer):

Tariff group 2 axles 3 axles 4 axles and more
Group E 5.38 7.41 10.97
Group A (EURO 6) 22.78 31.77 47.30
Group B (EURO 5 si EEV) 24.08 33.77 49.90
Group C (EURO 4) 25.68 35.57 52.50
Group D (EURO 0-3) 27.08 37.67 55.40

EURO 6 category trucks that were registered after July 1st, 2019, may be allowed to pay a lower tax (from 0.19 to 0.37 cents per kilometer) if their CO2 emissions are very low.

Higher tolls will be imposed on some of the Austrian roads. Drivers using the A12 and A13 motorways located between the cities of Kufstein and Innsbruck will pay higher tolls. The tariff on these roads will be 25% higher.
