Important information on new traffic restrictions in Europe

Starting from the end of this week, important changes will take place in Europe. Due to reconstruction works, closures are planned in the Mont Blanc and Frejus tunnels, vehicle traffic restrictions are being introduced on motorways in Germany and the Czech Republic, while Austria has introduced a list of new additional road bans. This article provides information on all of these important changes.

Planned closures of the Mont Blanc Tunnel

Reconstruction works will start in the Mont Blanc Tunnel on April 8, with plans to rebuild a 1,700m long surface area of the tunnel. As a result, the tunnel will be closed for 32 weekday nights during the next 10 weeks, until the end of June, during the hours of 7 p.m. to 7.30 a.m.

Exceptions will be made on Italian and French public holidays. Between 13 to 18 of June, traffic will be restricted for a shorter period, from 7.30 p.m. to 6.30 a.m.. Although the reconstruction work is due to finish on 18 June, the traffic will be restricted from 11.30 p.m. on 19 June until 21 June 6 a.m. The tunnel will be closed for a period of 30.5 hours.

Closure of the Frejus Tunnel

From 6 to 8 April, the Frejus Tunnel will be fully closed for a period of 32 hours. There will also be a traffic diversion in this tunnel from 11.30 p.m. to 4.30 a.m. on 4-5 April, 9-13 April, 16-20 April, 23 April and 26-27 April.

A7 motorway closure planned in Hamburg

Due to ongoing roadworks, road traffic on the A7 motorway will be restricted on the following days:

  • From 5 April 10 p.m. until 8 April 5 a.m., the motorway will be closed between the Hamburg-Heimfeld and Hamburg-Volkspark junctions.

  • From 6 April 9 p.m. to 7 April 10 a.m., the motorway will be closed between Hamburg-Wolkspark and Hamburg-Heimfeld junctions.

The motorway will also be closed on the following days:

  • From 12 April 8 p.m. until 15 April 5 a.m. in the direction of Hamburg.

  • On 13 April from 2 a.m. until 8 p.m. in the direction of Flensburg.

  • From 19 April 8 p.m. until 22 April 5 a.m. in the direction of Flensburg.

  • On 20 April from 2 a.m. until 8 p.m. in the direction of Hamburg

Closure of the D7 motorway in the Czech Republic

From April until June the traffic on the D7 motorway in the Czech Republic will be restricted due to road works on the following days:

  • From 2 to 10 April, traffic will be restricted to one lane in the Mlýnec - Kateřina section.

  • From 2 April to 25 May, the I/21 road will be closed between exit 128 and the Tachov junction.

  • From 2 to 14 April, exit 128 towards Prague will be closed for road works.

  • From 10 April to 11 June, the traffic in the Mlýnec - Kateřina motorway section will be limited to the left side of the road only. Drivers will be able to use two lanes when travelling towards Prague and one lane when travelling towards Germany.

Austria will be introducing new road restrictions for trucks

The Austrian government has decided to introduce additional road traffic restrictions for vehicles weighing more than 7.5 tonnes. These restrictions will be in force for the following days:

  • On 29 March from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., 30 March from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 25 April from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on the A12 motorway and on the A13 motorway at the Brenner Pass, for those heading towards Italy.

  • On 29 March and 3 October from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. on the A12 motorway and on the A13 motorway at the Brenner Pass for those heading towards Germany.

  • On all Saturdays from 6 July to 31 August from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the A12 motorway and on the A13 motorway at the Brenner Pass, for those heading towards Italy or Germany.

  • On all Saturdays from 29 June to 31 August from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on some parts of the A4 motorway.
