Border control checks in Europe are being strengthened again

A couple of months ago, several European countries decided to strengthen their border controls. In most of these countries, such measures have been taken due to the increased number of illegal migrants, the war in Ukraine, and the increased risk of terrorist attacks. However, most of these countries have decided to extend this period of tightened control once again - Poland, Germany, Austria, Italy, and the Czech Republic plan on continuing the enhanced checks.

Poland decided to extend the enhanced control period with Slovakia until January 2nd, 2024. Until this date, it is possible to enter Poland from Slovakia using the following border points:

  • Radoszyce,
  • Periwinkle,
  • Muszynka,
  • Piwniczna-Zdrój – Mnišek nad Popradom,
  • Jurgów, 
  • Chyżne,
  • Korbielów,
  • Zwardoń - Skalité Platforma.

Only citizens of the European Union or EFTA countries and their spouses and children are allowed to use some of the crossings:

  • Leluchów,
  • Konieczna, 
  • Niedzica,
  • Łysa Polana,
  • Chochołów,
  • Winiarczykówka,
  • Ujsoły,
  • Bór,
  • Jaworzynka – Čierne –Skalité.

Checks on the border between Austria and the Czech Republic have been prolonged until December 16th. Border control between the Czech Republic and Slovakia has been strengthened until January 3rd, 2024, and between Austria and Slovakia - until February 3rd, 2024. Italy decided to extend the tightened control period with Slovenia until December 19th.

Due to the annual Nobel Prize award ceremony, Norway has strengthened controls at all its border points until December 18th. In Germany, the period of tightened control at the border points with Poland, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland has been extended until December 15th.
