The main road transportation rule changes in the EU that will come into force in 2022

Starting from 2022 many new road transport rules will be implemented in the European Union. Some of them will take place in the EU territory as a whole while others will be applied only in specific member states. In this article we provide a summary of all main changes that you should take into account.

Changes in the EU Mobility Package rules

On February 2nd, 2022 new rules of the Mobility Package will be implemented across the European Union. These changes include the following:
    •    All truck drivers will now be required to register information about them crossing state borders in their digital tachographs.
    •    All drivers will be required to come back to their employer’s operating center or their residence at least once in the period of three to four consecutive weeks of working abroad.
    •    All drivers, who work with a partner / co-driver, will no longer be obligated to take a 45min break in their transportation vehicle.

Remote tyre pressure measurement

All newly approved trucks and trailers will have to have sensors remotely measuring the temperature and pressure of the tyres. This law will be implemented on July 6th and will be valid across all member states of the European Union.

Law changes in Spain

Starting from this year truck drivers will not be allowed to load and unload their vehicles. Only few exceptions will apply, in which cases the driver will have to pay an additional fee.

Simultaneously, the maximum waiting time at Regional Distribution Centers has now been limited to 1 hour. If the driver has to wait for longer than an hour, he will be entitled to a monetary compensation.

Changes on permissions to enter low-emission zones in the Netherlands

Starting from this year entry to low-emission zones that are present in 14 Dutch cities will be allowed only to electric vehicles and EURO VI category trucks. However, exemptions are in place - trucks that do not fit the necessary criteria will be allowed to apply for a one-day permit to enter the zone. The permits can be given up to 12 times a year.

Road transport rule changes in Belgium

Starting from March, 2022 Belgium is changing the rules of using mobile devices while driving. Using mobile devices for GPS services or music apps while driving will be allowed only if the device is placed in a holder on the dashboard. Not complying with the law will be punished with a €174 fine.

Simultaneously, the Wallonia region will be increasing the road toll tariffs. The new prices will depend on the vehicle’s total weight, EURO emission standard and the place where the road is located.
