Traffic changes in Tyrol and the Mont Blanc Tunnel

In January 2024, a new Saturday ban on trucks in the Austrian region of Tyrol and traffic restrictions in the Mont Blanc Tunnel will make traffic more difficult, despite the usual monthly road bans. The closure of the Frejus Tunnel due to the ongoing roadworks will also contribute to these changes. In this article, we provide information on these changes.

New winter ban for trucks comes into force in Tyrol

A new winter ban for lorry drivers is being introduced in Tyrol. The ban will apply on Saturdays. The ban came into force on 13 January and will continue until 9 March. The restriction applies from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The new law applies to lorries weighing more than 7.5 tonnes. During the ban, drivers of such vehicles are prohibited from using the A12 motorway and the Brenner motorway (A13) when travelling to or through Italy or Germany.

Traffic restrictions in the Mont Blanc Tunnel

The Mont Blanc Tunnel connecting France and Italy is scheduled to be closed on some of the days in January. On specific days, between the hours of 10:30 p.m. and 6 a.m., the tunnel will be subject to alternating traffic and other restrictions. These changes will happen on the following days:

  • 18-19 January,
  • 22-23 January,
  • 23-24 January, 
  • 24-25 January,
  • 25-26 January.
