Truck safety regulation changes in the European Union

Starting from July of this year, the European Union will be introducing a law in all of the Member States according to which some trucks will be obliged to have Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems installed. Some countries, such as Germany, have already started implementing the needed measures for the implementation of this law. These systems will be mandatory for all new vehicle type approvals starting from July 2022 and for all newly registered trailers or semi-trailers from July 2024.

This Tyre Pressure Monitoring System automatically informs the driver if the tyre pressure has dropped by 20% or more or if the system stops working in the first 10min of such an incident. This allows to ensure the safety of the driver and others while simultaneously it allows to use less fuel and helps to keep the tyres in good condition.

Similar changes are being considered in Sweden as well. The country‘s government wants to implement a law according to which the pressure of semi-trailer tyres as well as the driving axle tyres would be regulated during the winter period. The proposal was introduced in the light of increasing jackknifing incidents in Sweden. Proper tyre pressure allows to reduce the risk of such accidents and ensures road safety. If this proposal gets confirmed by the European Commission, the tyre pressure regulations will be conducted every year from December 1st until March 31th.
